LOS LLANOS |
The dry season is also the time when the "llaneros" are hired to round up and brand the cattle. On small wiry horses, they search for wandering herds.
The hiss of branding irons on burning hide sears the air and bellows resound through the dawn as the steers are corralled for market. In the evening after a huge barbecue "criollo" music from "cuatro " and harp surrounds the ranch and there may be dancing. The "llaneros" are friendly people, proud and independent, generous and hospitable. |

Visitors go to the "llanos" to enjoy the solitude of nature, to
watch the birds and animals, to fish and hunt pictures with their camera.
During the rainy season 60% of the land is water-logged and flooded by swollen rivers. It is home time for the "llaneros" and reproduction and nesting time for the birds.
With the growing number of wildlife observers, various owners of the "hatos" or cattle ranches have started to offer facilities to accommodate guests. |
